MSNBC has a article up on a proposed resolution for the Republican National Committee. Linky goodness!
I would invite you to browse through this amazing document before I review it. But the gist is:
They wrap themselves in the name "Reagan", enumerate 10 guiding 'principles', and then say that they RNC will not give money unless a person agrees with 8 of the 10.
My summary of the 10 is below the fold.
- Oppose stimulus.
- Oppose government run healthcare, which, oddly, no one is proposing.
- Oppose cap and trade.
- Oppose card check.
- Oppose amnesty for illegal aliens.
- Support "military-recommended" troop surges in Iraq?!?! and Afghanistan.
- Support containment of North Korea and Iran, esp. their nuclear programs.
- Oppose repealing DOMA.
- Oppose health care rationing! and government funded abortions
- Oppose restrictions on gun rights.
In short:
They support killing brown people. They oppose helping anyone at home.
(9) is really (2). They couldn't even come up with a decent list of 10 things to talk about.
1 is a done deal. (2) doesn't really do what they say it does. As far as I know, the President has not proposed (5) or (10).
This is really a fairly stupid list although I'm sure their spin-masters will make it sound much better by the time they have finished their work. But from political perspective, is this really going to help elect more Republicans?
- If the economy turns around, as it appears it may, this is a boat anchor for their candidates.
- This is not going to help them much; any damage done to the Democratic Party by proposing HC is already done.
- This can lead to scary attack ads but most Americans think something needs to be done about global warming.
- This is a sop to the corporate masters but will not swing many votes.
- This is probably a popular stance to take. Except no one is trying to extend amnesty per se.
- This is not a popular position.
- Nice position. Tell us how you're going to do it, boys. How many American kids have to die?
- This is probably a popular stance in some parts of the country. The same parts where the GOP already wins elections. Way to keep what you've got, Goposaurs!
- Death panels and Stupak-Pitts! Again, the base will love this, the rest of America will pronounce a hearty "meh" upon them.
- The base will love this; but no one is actually trying to do this.
So, I conclude that this is a suicide pact if the economy turns around by 2Q 2010. I hope that the Democratic party keeps this list handy, because any candidate who receives RNC money by definition agrees with 80% or more.
