UPDATE: Adam Bink at Open Left is providing numbers from the NO on 1 boiler room
We keep reading that the eyes of the country are on the Pine Tree State, as Mainers go to the polls today to vote on seven ballot questions.
But the one that you're concerned about is Question 1:
People's Veto: An Act To End Discrimination in Civil Marriage and Affirm Religious Freedom
"Do you want to reject the new law that lets same-sex couples marry and allows individuals and religious groups to refuse to perform these marriages?"
The best source for returns is the Bangor Daily News site here. I'll add what I can, and you may want to check tweets from the NO campaign.
Use this as your Equal Marriage in Maine Return Thread!
UPDATEx2: As anticipated, opponents of equal marriage are fairing well in northern Maine:
Aroostook County: 75% yes, 25% NO, 45% of voters
Washington County: Same as Aroostook
Piscatiquis: 88% Yes, NO 12%
But these are VERY rural areas of the state, with little population. They are also very poor, and are rejecting TABOR and the vehicle excise tax repeal.
Chin up!
UPDATEx3: video link to the live stream from the NO on 1 party (h/t to I forgot - sorry).
UPDATEx4: Ordinance 1856 passes in Kalamazoo, Michigan. With the passage of this legislation, LGBT individuals in Kalamazoo are provided legal protection from discrimination at work, in seeking housing and in enjoying public accommodations such as restaurants and hotels.
UPDATEx5: York County is the real bummer. It is the most southern in Maine, and while it does contain many rural communities, one would think that it would be a bit more hip. With 21% of precincts reporting, NO holds a very slim 50.3 - 49.7 lead.
UPDATEx6: There are seven questions on the ballot today, and one would expand the availability of medicinal marijuana. What is odd is that of Maine's 16 counties, 8 of them are opposing same-sex marriage while voting to approve greater access to pot. And two more are at 50-50 on the pot question.
UPDATEx7: The BDN has opponents of equal marriage taking the lead 50.5% t0 49.5% No.
The National Organization for Marriage, the Mormon front group financing the Yes campaign, just sent out this tweet:
Yes on 1 now up 1 point in Maine! Tell your friends! Pray!
Of course, the votes have all been cast, so the outcome has been determined, just not the counting - unless the Yes side is praying for divine intervention to change the actual tally.
UPDATEx8: It's officially a toss up - BDN hasn't reported in 30 minutes, PPH has NO ahead by 0.3%, NYTimes has Yes ahead by same margin.
It sucks folks, but the votes have all been cast, and the outcome is not clear. My apologies.
UPDATEx9: NYTimes has had Yes on 1 (opponents) trending up the last half hour, now 51.5 to 48.5 No. Absentee ballots may be late figure - my town hasn't filed yet because so many of them.
UPDATEx10: PPH shows Yes (opponents) with a 4.5% lead, NYTimes a 4.2% edge with 75% in. Not looking good.
