Sorry for the hit & run, but this is too important not to share:
Governor Paterson has announced that there will be a marriage equality vote in the NY State Senate on Tuesday. For those of you who haven't been following this closely, polls show that a majority of New Yorkers favor equal marriage. Our Governor supports it. Our state Assembly supports it. But our state Senate, a branch of government that is grotesquely ineffective, is so broken that they haven't even been able to have a simple vote.
Well, the wait for a vote appears to be over. In the wake of the Maine debacle, one of my favorite Martin Luther King quotes is even more apt:
"Truth crushed to earth will rise again."
There is a lot of work to do. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get involved. Follow me around the fold to find out how:
Western Queens for Marriage Equality is having a candlelight vigil outside stae Senator George Onorato's office (28-11 Astoria Blvd.) at 5:00 Sunday night to try again to persuade our Senator to vote for equality (Senator Onorato is one of a small minority of Democrats who currently does not support equal marriage. We desparately need to change his mind.).
Please join us: Rally in Western Queens
In addition, Marriage Equality New Yorkand Empire State Pride Agenda have organized multiple events to try to pressure our state Senate to do the right thing. Join us. Speak out and be heard:
Attend a candle light vigil on Monday
Go to Albany on the day of the vote.
And please call a State Senator.
I just got married in September. It was beautiful. I hope all of my LGBT friends in New York will be free to experience the same thing next week:
