Now that the celebrations have subsided, it's really time to look at the health care bill as it stands.
With a conservative 5-4 court sooner or later to take another abortion case, the current law shows a significant intent of congress to make abortion inaccessible to the majority of women in this country.
So what options are on the table:
1) The Senate accepts the Stupak language and Obama signs it into law with an opt-out or a trigger.
While I don't believe in unrestricted abortion at will, this amendment goes way too far for me. It is unconscionable that a democratic senate or president would sign this unconstitutional monstrosity unaltered.
2) The Senate strips the Stupak amendment and passes a bill with an opt-out or a trigger.
We will be unable to count on the 60 pro-life democrats for any other contentious votes including tax increases, energy, cap and trade, etc.
3) The health care bill is never signed into law.
Rejecting the bill would result in the maintenance of the horrors of pre-existing conditions, in increasing health care costs, and the expansion of plutocracy for a generation.
If you had to choose one of the three which would it be?
Even if you believe there are more options, I'd appreciate your vote on the above, in addition to an extensive discussion.
