Today, a Senator appointed by a complete douche under questionable circumstances did something for the good of the country. He's not running for re-election, so he has nothing to prove, except that he works for his constituency. Like most of us he knows this 'compromise' (read complete surrender) is a travesty.
This Senator's name is Roland Burris. He's not going to roll over like the rest of the cowardice bastards. Why? Because once again he's got nothing to lose and everything to gain. He can wipe the stain from his appointment by doing something for the good of us all, something unheard of in the hallowed halls of Congress.
Tonight I did three things. I removed a numbered print by Antar Dayal picturing a pen drawn Obama and the phrase 'Yes We Can' from my wall, and I emailed both Senator Durbin and the Whitehouse. Don't take the removal of the print as a sign that in 2010 and 2012 I still won't vote for the least worse, but take it as a symbol that until that statement is proven to me, I will not display it in a place of honor. The following is the email I sent, and I urge anyone who cares to send a personal email as well:
Today Senator Burris announced that he would vote against cloture for any healthcare bill without a public option. I beg you to oppose such a bill as well. We should have begun this debate with single payer, but we compromised before the battle began. We compromised again by nixing the strong public option, and now we are talking triggers. I bought an Antar Dayal numbered print titled 'yes we can' picturing now President Obama. Tonight I took it down. I know Burris has nothing to lose, but you sir, should share his convictions. This 'compromise' is a compromise of everything we believe in, and it is ridiculous that Senators from such tiny states as Nebraska and one of the Dakotas can derail it all. Medicare for all can be done through reconciliation. If this bill goes through, we will kiss our majority in the house goodbye, and possibly lose the President's re-election in 2010. Democrats don't turn out when the people they worked so hard to elect fail to deliver. I wasted almost $3,000 on a candidate who promised hope, and all I see is a bunch of weak kneed politicians pandering to nutjobs. Be who you were elected to be, and we will support you. I'm losing my faith in the leaders of this country. Why do Democrats acquiesce to Republicans when they are in charge, but cower in fear when we give them a supermajority? Think about that. What reason do we have to give you more seats and the presidency if you squander them.
