Clearly not. When the announcement was first made, I thought that the decision of the Nobel prize committee was brilliant.
It was an effort to change things, to help Obama move to a direction that will really bring peace in the world. Before his election, Obama had sent signs that he wants to do this. His speeches were remarkable and seemed to reflect a wish for a dramatic change in foreign policy from the disastrous Bush regime.
Unfortunately, as Obama said during his acceptance speech:
"Still, we are at war, and I am responsible for the deployment of thousands of young Americans to battle in a distant land. Some will kill. Some will be killed. And so I come here with an acute sense of the cost of armed conflict — filled with difficult questions about the relationship between war and peace, and our effort to replace one with the other."
Yes, he is right. He is responsible for escalating a war that no longer has purpose and he is responsible for sending poor young people to kill and be killed in a war that has no point. Surrounded by Bush loyalists (Gates, Petraeus and others) he is essentially continuing similar failed policies and war escalations. EXCEPT that he does that with eloquent speeches.
Well, elequent speeches should not be enough for a Nobel. Obama is clearly failing as a leader to promote peace around the world. He does not deserve the Nobel Peace Prize.
