Got up early this morning to finish wrapping some last minute gifts, and didn't want to wake up the household; hubby, the dogs and cats are all still asleep, so I decided to listen the the music I grew up with, with headphones on.
I grew up in a home where we celebrated Christmas even though my Dad was an atheist, and my grandmother was a Bahá'í. It was less religious than a simply a family tradition, though my mom always opened the dinner with a prayer for peace in the world, and love between folks of all colors.
I don't remember much about the gifts I got. I do remember the music that became part of the yearly ritual. I'd like to share those tunes I loved (and still do) from the holiday season, and invite you all to share others, no matter the tradition.
We always opened with Nat King Cole, who my dad grew up with in Chicago, and played with in a little pick up band in High School.
Nat King Cole- Christmas Song
My mom would always counter with her favorite vocalist, so we had to have some Ella Fitzgerald.
Ella Fitzgerald - Have yourself a merry little Christmas
As I got older, I would pipe up and demand some Johnny Mathis.
Johnny Mathis - The Little Drummer Boy
My mom like Johnny Mathis too, but preferred
Oh Holy Night
My grandmother adored Ray Charles. So he got played too. Here's a real bluesy one by Brother Ray:
Ray Charles 'Merry Christmas Baby'
As a preteen I loved do-wop tunes, and this ballad, sung by my do-wop "crush", Frankie Lymon
Frankie Lymon - It's Christmas Once Again
There are way too many to put up here. Enough from me for now. Please feel free to share your favorites. I will probably add some more, when I get finished wrapping these gifts.
Wishing you a safe journey if you are traveling, food on the table, good company, health and love.
A hug from me to you.
