What is her problem? For years, Susan Collins has given nice lip service to trying to address Alzheimer's Disease, but her actions during the stimulus fight have shown she's just blowing wind....
Collins has been a leader of the Congressional Task Force on Alzheimer's Disease and has advocating spending billions of dollars to fight the disease. But now, when the rubber meets the road, when she has a chance to help provide funding for preventive health and wellness in the stimulus package -- that would serve to retain and create JOBS and fight disease at the same time, she's the lead advocate for keeping this money out of the stimulus package.
She claims that the stimulus is not the "appropriate" place to address these concerns -- completely running contrary to all analyses that say this funding would directly save thousands of public health workers from being laid off and create new health jobs. (More than 10,000 have already been laid off, and thousands more are expected... the House stimulus package of $3 billion for prevention and wellness is expected to save or create 20,000 jobs. These are long term jobs - since the health sector is the only growing sector of our economy.)
Programs that make it easier for people to engage in physical activity and other preventive care have been shown to help prevent Alzheimer's or delay the onset of the disease. Here's Collins chance to support jobs and Alzheimer's prevention - and instead, she's fighting it... complete hypocracy at play - did she only support trying to get more money when it wasn't possible? or she's just picked the wrong token suck up point to oppose in the stimulus to try to cover herself with the conservatives? Either way, instead of being part of the solution, she's become the problem.
