It's a question for the ages. Why would Republicans enthusiastically support a three trillion dollar war with nothing but terrible outcomes and fiercely oppose an economic stimulus program costing less with the potential to do unlimited good? The Iraq war has killed or maimed nearly fifty-thousand Americans, demolished our good name and high standing in the world, strengthened our enemies, laid waste to a nation, and served as the most effective recruitment tool possible for the very terrorists we're meant to be fighting. The stimulus package is the first step to putting our own country back on its feet. So why does the GOP wholeheartedly endorse the former and practically to a man reject the latter? The answer is staring us in the face.
For years now Republicans have assured us that evil men in beards and pajamas hate us for our freedom and live only for our annihilation. They want to destroy our way of life and erase our abiding principles from the face of the earth. They despise our humane liberality, our embrace of difference, our profound belief in the dignity and worth of the individual. They will not rest until their authoritarian theocracy has shackled the entire world.
A chilling story, and parts of it are even true. There is indeed a plot to crush our liberties. It seeks to turn our free state into a police state in which citizens are under constant surveillance, free speech is discouraged, and freedom of movement is curtailed. It pretends our pluralistic society is a Christian nation. It has been happening before our very eyes. Tapped phones, email intercepted. Dissenting voices silenced or slandered. Education and health maginalized. It's much easier to boss the sick and ignorant. And remember how simple it used to be to get through airports? Of course that was back in the days when we could afford to travel. The economic collapse has done more to hurt freedom than any terrorist action imaginable.
All this was engineered by the GOP. The guys in beards and pajamas are mere decoys. The real terrorists are the Republicans. Of course they don't want bridges and schools, health care and jobs, anything that threatens their goal of domination and control. Their assault on liberty is ongoing, and unless we recognize them for what they truly are, it will succeed.
