Burris Discloses Fundraising Requests
Senator Reveals Contacts With Blagojevich's Brother, Other Associates of Ex-Governor
CHICAGO, Feb. 14 -- Sen. Roland W. Burris (D-Ill.), appointed to fill President Obama's former seat in the U.S. Senate, has informed Illinois lawmakers that he did not tell them the complete story about his contacts with close associates of former governor Rod Blagojevich (D) before he got the job.
In a sworn affidavit made public Saturday, Burris said that the governor's brother asked him in a series of conversations to raise campaign funds for Blagojevich, who was later charged with trying to profit from his executive actions and removed from office.
The affidavit was Burris's third attempt to describe his contacts with the Blagojevich team during the months before his surprise appointment. It differed on several key points from the testimony he gave under oath to an Illinois House of Representatives impeachment committee
.
Always having been willing to go out on that proverbial limb with my predictions, here's today's fearless forecast.
Senator(?) Roland ( Have you seen my mausoleum?) Burris is toast. The Republicans in Illinois are going to make this a major political scandal and the Democrats are just sick to death of having to defend the indefensible within their ranks. They want to move on.
And as far as the administration is concerned, they've had more than enough agro in the last few weeks over cabinet choices, tax problems, etc. If, and I think it will happen, Burris is charged with perjury (he may want to see if Bill Clinton will take his call), the Dems are going to come down on him like a ton of bricks. Burris has absolutely zero zilch nada good will or political capital that he good turn to to save his ass. You can expect him to resign for health reasons or wanting to spend more time with his family. He will suddenly realize that the demands of being a U.S. senator just takes too much time away from family and loved ones.
Burris should be very concerned the next time his secretary buzzes him and tells him that the President is on the line. Buh-bye.
