The Grammy for the year’s Best New Artist is always one of the most coveted awards and one of the most intensely competitive. This year should be no different.
The nominees include Adele, Duffy, the Jonas Brothers, Lady Antebellum and Jazmine Sullivan. This group of nominees is about as diverse as it gets. While an argument can be made for all five, there were more than a few eyebrows raised when budding superstars Katy Perry and Leona Lewis were passed over.
Whether or not they are "artists," the Jonas Brothers are certainly the most bankable of the new talents.

The Best New Artist category has heralded the beginnings of great and not-so-great careers since 1960, when Bobby Darin took the honors. It is an odd category, pitting all musical and non-musical artists against each other. In 1961, comedian Bob Newhart won the award over opera star Leontyne Price.
The Best New Artist category has heralded the beginnings of some remarkable careers. Past winners include The Beatles, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and Carrie Underwood.
More interesting, though, is an examination of some of the biggest names in entertainment who were either nominated but lost or weren’t even nominated.
Some of the biggest travesties in this category, a group I’ll call Grammy’s Dirty Dozen, include:
- Robert Goulet beats out The Four Seasons and Peter, Paul and Mary
- Bobby Gentry (Ode to Billie Joe) wins, Jefferson Airplane and The Fifth Dimension lose.
- Jose Feliciano tops Cream
- The Carpenters win, Elton John loses
- America wins over The Eagles and Loggins and Messina
- Starland Vocal Band (Afternoon Delight) tops Boston
- Debby Boone beats out Foreigner and Stephen Bishop
- A Taste of Honey tops both The Cars and Elvis Costello
- Christopher Cross (Sailing) beat out future Hall of Famers, The Pretenders
- Marc Cohen gets the nod over Seal and Boyz II Men
- Paula Cole (a two-hit wonder) beats out an impressive group that included Puff Daddy, Fiona Apple and Erykah Badu
- Shelby Lynne tops country legend-to-be Brad Paisley
Even more striking, think of the people/groups that weren’t even nominated: The Who, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, Genesis, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, David Bowie, The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers, Simon and Garfunkle... to name but a few.
