I have read several of these "accept ..." diaries over the last 24 hours and some of the comments. Usually I stop after 50 or so because y'all drift off into inane flame wars and bore the crap out of me. I have lost track of who's doing their Rodney King impression and who's singing "Kossacks Uber Alles" and I really don't care. It's all feldercarb to me.
For myself, I am first and foremost a partisan big-D Democrat. I grew up as a Democrat and find that overall I am more comfortable with Democratic Party values than those of the GOP. Theoretically, I suppose there may exist a Republican somewhere who is better on the issues than his Democratic opponent, but I haven't seen it happen in a partisan election in my voting lifetime. In 20+ years, I have voted the Democratic ticket in every partisan race in my district.
I tend toward pragmatism when it comes to elections. I have worked for Democrats who are far to the left of me, and far to the right of me. Even when I don't like a particular Congressional candidate or his stand on certain issues, I remind myself that, come January 3, he will be voting for Nancy Pelosi instead of John Boehner, and that's a big enough difference for me in the beginning. Also, I look at the craven centrists of the world as "gateway Democrats" for voters. If the voters in a district get used to the idea of voting for Democrats, it will be that much easier to get them to vote for REAL Democrats.
On the issues, I am all over the map -- on some I am quite liberal, and in some areas I move past moderate to conservative. On that basis alone, it's hard for me to get riled because somebody isn't ideologically "pure". I think that the vast majority of us on DKos, and in the Democratic Party, have the same broad goals. We want to strive toward a better, fairer, more just America that gives every individual the chance to fulfill her G*d-given potential. We even largely agree on some of the ways to achieve that -- health care for all, increased access to quality education and vocational training, a fair and just economic system that allows average working families to not only survive but thrive, and so on. We just disagree on specific means and methods, and that's OK.
I suspect that the "Accept" orginator was trying to distinguish between principled and respectful opposition to such Obama proposals as the bank-centric bailout plan and continuing the Dumbya regime's assault on the Bill of Rights, and the Purists' rants because he's not doing everything exactly the way they want right now. We need to remember that difference, and embrace it. It's perfectly fine to push for a change in Administration policy re FISA and the like, and try to keep Obama from being captured by the failed DLC/Reep agenda. It is not fine to go nutbar trollish because Obama isn't delivering your version of Progressive Nirvana by Easter. Remember people, the root word of "progressive" is progress, not perfection. Let's not get lost in the weeds, OK?
