Walked outside to get in my car and drive to work this morning. My rear windshield was busted out. Entirely. Safety glass like confetti all around my bumperstickers: "NO on Prop 8" (I live in California), "OBAMA '08" and "Single Payer National Health Insurance".
Nothing was left behind except a small piece of concrete aggregate which must have chipped off the bigger block. It had flown into the front seat and was under my brake pedal. I was parked on the street in front of my house.
I have several questions. I guess I'll ask them, and also explain who I am, below the fold.
Thanks for reading. This is my first diary, tho I've been reading and commenting for a few years. I live in a conservative, back country neighborhood. The "Yes on Prop 8" lawn signs were thick on my street last November. That's one of the factors that makes me think this was a hate crime.
My questions:
1. Should I call the police to report this? I took some pictures.
2. My insurance is useless, as replacement would cost less than my deductible, which is high to help me conserve money...but should I call it in to them, too? I have Century 21.
3. Is there any trick to putting in a duct tape and plastic replacement? Any certain type of sturdy plastic work best? (The reason I don't want to just replace the windshield is that then I'd be a sitting duck, vulnerable to repeat vandalism, as I will not remove my bumperstickers.)
4. I'm going to use the cheap replacement to display an even more prominent message in support of marriage for everyone. Civil rights all around! Any suggestions for a message? (I want to protect the wonderful people I live with, my sister and brother in law and nephew. They offered me a room in their home when I couldn't find a job in my field and had to take a lower paying job.)
5. What should I google to find answers to replacing a busted windshield, and dealing effectively with a hate crime? I tried several terms and sites like You Tube, but am coming up with zilch.
Thanks very much for reading. If you can help with answers or emotional support I'm grateful. Actions like this tend to make a person stronger and more active. I'm looking forward to getting deeper into the fight.
