Embarrassingly Inept Obama Stumbles Over Diplomacy, Protocol Yet Again
As Well-Put by @RBStratford: \"Another Day, Another Breach of Protocol From Obama, Prince of Eloquence\"

Update: Via Jake Tapper, President Obama’s gift to the Queen was….an iPod? Wow. At least it wasn’t cheesy American region 1 DVDs…
This time it was on his visit to Great Britain — or, if you take his word for it, England, which he referred to in lieu of the nation’s proper name in a move that likely incurred the less-than-warm-and-fuzzy feelings in residents of Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland (the home of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown) that it would in residents of, say, New York, Texas, and California if a foreign leader claiming to be a citizen of the world and a bright new light in the international diplomatic scene came to America and spoke of his country’s great relationship with, say, Kentucky.
Breach of protocol, eh?
Let's take a little stroll down memory lane:
Bush nearly places Queen Elizabeth in 18th century
Mon May 7, 2007 7:52pm EDT
By Caren Bohan
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush, no stranger to the occasional verbal misstep, nearly placed Queen Elizabeth II in the 18th century on Monday in welcoming her to the White House on a state visit.
...
Bush noted the queen's long history of dealing with successive American governments, just barely stopping himself before dating her to 1776, the year the 13 British colonies declared their independence from Britain.
Elizabeth has occupied the British throne for 55 years and is 81.
"The American people are proud to welcome your majesty back to the United States, a nation you've come to know very well. After all you've dined with 10 U.S. presidents. You've helped our nation celebrate its bicentennial in 17 -- in 1976," Bush said.

Blundering Bush makes ANOTHER gaffe as he winks at the Queen
Last updated at 11:51 08 May 2007
When you've just made it sound like the Queen is more than 200 years old, there may be a few ways of recovering from the gaffe.
But turning to her and giving her a sly wink is probably not included in any book of royal etiquette.
The Queen received the wink with a frosty glare.
That's what happened yesterday after George Bush mangled his greeting to the Queen on her state visit to the U.S.
Stumbling over his words, he came perilously close to suggesting that the monarch had toured the States in 1776.
And then there's this:
Queen triumphs amid Bush gaffes
By Nicholas Witchell
BBC Royal correspondent
We will never know what the Queen really thinks of George W Bush.
President Bush was coached on etiquette, US media said
Reputedly, when they met in 1991 during the Queen's visit to the White House of George Bush senior, George junior introduced himself to the Queen as the "black sheep of the family", and asked the Queen who was his equivalent in the Windsor family.
Sadly, the Queen's reply is not recorded, but young George's unconventional approach to the British monarch on that occasion was said to have earned him a very stern look from his mother, the redoubtable Barbara Bush.
And who could forget Yo, Blair:
Transcript: Bush and Blair's unguarded chat
The conversation
A transcript of the off-the-cuff conversation between US President George W Bush and UK Prime Minister Tony Blair during a break at the G8 conference in Russia.
The president was caught on tape using an expletive as he described the actions of Hezbollah in attacking Israel.
They also discussed the exchange of gifts.
Bush: Yo, Blair. How are you doing?
...
Blair: Yes
Bush: Tell her to put him on, them on the spot. Thanks for the sweater - it's awfully thoughtful of you.
Blair: It's a pleasure.
Bush: I know you picked it out yourself.
Blair: Oh absolutely - in fact I knitted it!!!
(laughter)
...
Bush: You see the irony is what they need to do is get Syria, to get Hezbollah to stop doing this shit and it's all over...
Blair: [indistinct]
Bush: [indistinct]
Blair: Dunno... Syria....
Bush: Why?
Blair: Because I think this is all part of the same thing...
Bush: (with mouth full of bread) Yeah
...
Yo. Shit. Yeah.
And lastly, a true classic in diplomatic history:
And may I just add that Apple is a great American company - why wouldn't the President want to showcase one of their most successful products?
