The "torture scandal" seems to have become the sole focus of Democratic supporters, to the exclusion of every other issue.
On MSNBC, the Democratic cable network, the entire prime-time schedule - "Countdown with Keith Olbmermann" and "The Rachel Maddow Show" devoted virtually the entire program to denouncing the Republicans for condoning torture by the U.S. military against alleged terrorist captives and calling for the current administration to prosecute persons in the previous administration for their complicity in this activity.
Virtually the entire Daily Kos board seems to be devoted to this, as well.
Certainly, there is a segment of the U.S. population
that believes that what the U.S. military did was torture and that the perpetrators and orchestrators should be exposed and prosecuted.
Just as certainly, there is another segment that supports what the military did.
And there is a third segment that believes that the actions of the military were excessive, but that the attempts to expose and prosecute it are damaging to the country and a bad thing.
So it's an open question as to what the political ramifications of this issue will be for the Democrats.
I don't claim that I'm necessarily right, but my own view is that
THIS IS FUCKING NUTS! WITH OLBERMANN AND HIS ACOLYTES IN NEAR ORGASMIC MODE, RELISHING THIS ISSUE WITH WHICH HE CAN BASH THE MILITARY NON-STOP, AND SEEING SOME DEMOCRATIC SENATORS AND CONGRESSMEN JOINING THE "FUN" IS GOING TO MAKE THE DEMOCRATS A MINORITY PARTY AGAIN IF THEY DON'T CUT THIS SHIT OUT! MOST OF THIS COUNTRY IS NOT GOING TO SUPPORT NON-STOP, GLEEFUL CONTEMPTUOUS ATTACKS ON THE MILITARY.
At least Barrack Obama is too sensible to embrace this insanity, but if his party is committed to imploding, he'll go down with them.
