It's heartbreaking when a death drives a recall of a food item and in this case, it was the loss of a seven year old girl in Cleveland, Ohio.
A 7-year-old Cleveland girl died Sunday from an E. coli infection that local health officials say could be linked to a massive ground-beef recall issued Thursday from an Illinois-based company.
Health officials did not identify the girl or provide details of the circumstances that led to her death. But Cleveland Health Director Matthew Carroll said the case might be the latest in a cluster of E. coli infections traced to Valley Meats LLC of Coal Valley, Ill.
The company pulled nearly 100,000 pounds of hamburger patties Thursday after a U.S. Department of Agriculture investigation confirmed that three Cleveland-area residents were infected by eating the same tainted ground beef.
It seems the recalls keep coming and we still have to question the safety of our food. There are more details regarding the recall with specifics regarding product names, etc.
The New York Times put up a brief but to the point alert regarding the recall...
A meatpacker in Coal Valley, Ill., recalled 95,898 pounds of ground-beef products after a "cluster" of E. coli infections connected to the product was discovered, the federal Agriculture Department said. The beef was produced by the meatpacker, Valley Meats LLC, in March and distributed in 10-pound to 40-pound packages, the agency said. The meat was sold under brand names like as 3S, Grillmaster, J&B, Klub, Thick ’N Savory and Ultimate. For more information, go to the Food Safety and Inspection Service Web site, www.fsis.usda.gov.

These ground beef products were produced on March 10, 2009, and were distributed to various consignees nationwide.
The problem was discovered through an epidemiological investigation of illnesses. On May 13, 2009, FSIS was informed by the Ohio Department of Health of a cluster of E. coli O157:H7 infections. Illnesses have been reported in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Illinois. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact a physician.
E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and in the most severe cases, kidney failure. The very young, seniors and persons with weak immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness.

H/T to CornSyrupAwareness for this link to a recent New York Times article regarding food safety in the US.
Increasingly, the corporations that supply Americans with processed foods are unable to guarantee the safety of their ingredients. In this case, ConAgra could not pinpoint which of the more than 25 ingredients in its pies was carrying salmonella. Other companies do not even know who is supplying their ingredients, let alone if those suppliers are screening the items for microbes and other potential dangers, interviews and documents show.
This is becoming a wide reaching issue for progressives because of the impact it has on our health, well being and our environment. Food safety touches so many lives and can affect those who are most vulnerable in our society. As large corporations push their products that they can't say is safe and they lie about how the effect our health, we have to continue to push for regulation and changing how we view our food.
