Ok, so the Supremes opened up a can of worms. We deal with it and we move on. Let's show them who they are up against. If they want to do battle, we are smarter, stronger, and much more energized. Let's give California some major change. How? Follow below the thread:
As much as people will want to run ads showing nice Gay and Lesbian couples, many of the people who voted for Prop 8 don't really care. They are bigots. So our side needs some other ideas. Since California is so Proposition happy, the Gay and Lesbian community needs to use this to their advantage. Add some other propostions of their own, besides the one to overturn Prop 8. Give people a reason to go to the polls.
The first proposition should be to 1. "Tax all churches' real estate holdings, tithings, bingo, video sales and other revenue streams, and use it to provide UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE for all Californians". What can be more compassionate for churches that seem to pontificate morality through referendum to fund the process to provide health care for all Californians!? Sell the idea to the average churchgoer as "imagine how nice it would be to drop your weekly thith in the basket knowing that you are funding your own health care at the same time. Sell it to everyone as the answer to one of California's biggest issues....the health of its citizens. Give blending of the chruch and state under Bush a whole new "compassionate" meaning. If the line is be greyed, make it work the best way you can.
Watch the churches freak out. They would have to spend millions to defend themselves, as it would be a very popular proposition. Every dollar spent defending this proposition is one less dollar going against defending the repeal of Prop 8. We may even peel off alot of the support of the church going public, because THEY will be getting something for that weekly donation in the basket.
Secondly, co-ordinate forces with the Legalization of Pot crowd...Work together and get a second Prop on the ballot " Legalizing the sale of Marijuana in the State of California and using the proceeds to Provide Universal Health Care for all residents". Now you have made UHC the goal and the debate issue in the media for all new tax sources. The less you have the rabids preaching hate and talking about the UHC issue, the better. They can only pay for so many ads. Whats worse? Gays marrying, or having to pay for health care through a new tax? Tough call. Also, the Legalization of Marijuana supporters will flock to the polls knowing they are getting free health care by voting yes, and coming out FOR the Proposition. Even if Prop 8 were to be upheld in the next election, you have dealt a serious blow to the finances of the churches, because they will have to pay to either 1. defend the Tax the Church Prop, or 2. pay to fund the UHC. But with only a 2% swing needed in the electorate, victory will be ours.
In the meantime, fight to repeal Prop 8. By mobilizing our own forces through the frontal assault with Ads, etc, mobilizing our allies in the Pot Initiative to get to the polls, and diverting the resources of the churches to fight on muliple fronts, we will be victorious. They will learn you "Don't fuck with the Queers". Stonewall lives on. Make it work for us and make it hurt them in their pocket book at the same time. They would have a hard time justifying why they shouldnt be part of the solution for a healthy, compassionate California.
A multi proposition attack is the answer. If people will sign one petition, have them sign 3.
