After two years of long days traveling and filming along the border and one year of post-production, Viva Zapata Productions, is pleased to announce the completion of their first feature documentary.
One day in February 2007, a man from the Department of Homeland Security arrived at Gloria Garza's house in South Texas. He asked her to sign a letter granting permission to build a 25 foot fence on her property. She thought he was joking.
Each of the residents of Granjeno soon found themselves holding similar letters. This small town of retirees were now in the middle of a national debate on immigration.
The Wall is a documentary about the building of a fence along the Mexican border. Filmed over two years on the Mexican border, nobody could have imagined how many problems the fence would create, from an excess of dead bodies to an increase in smuggling costs. A border sheriff, a small town, and two illegal immigrants all become intertwined in the story of a new US policy to build a 25 foot fence.
Filmmaker Ricardo A. Martinez and a small film crew often risked their safety as the film's story took them deep into Mexico to interview immigrants staying at Coyote run safehouses. They even managed to capture some "controversial statements" while filming with the notorious Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, a group of vigilantes patrolling the Arizona Desert. A notable feat considering Ricardo's Mexican/Ecuadorian heritage. Could the footage have any bearing on the Senate aspirations of the group's founder, Chris Symcox?
The film is now ready for screening and Viva Zapata Productions hopes to screen the film ambitiously, including many the districts and counties which are represented by the film's many political stars.
