NJ governor candidate called before US panel
By ANGELA DELLI SANTI – June 19 2009
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey's Republican candidate for governor has agreed to testify before a congressional subcommittee on white-collar crime settlements he brokered as U.S. attorney.
Chris Christie sent a letter Friday to Rep. John Conyers Jr., chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary, agreeing to testify Thursday in Washington.
The committee wants to hear from Christie on no-bid contracts given to lawyers to oversee deals between the U.S. attorney's office and companies accused of wrongdoing.
Several contracts awarded under Christie's leadership have raised concerns, including his hiring of former Justice Department boss John Ashcroft. Ashcroft's firm made up to $52 million in one deal.
Christie is a former New Jersey Attorney General, head prosecutor of New Jersey.
What basic appearance of impropriety is needed to start a prosecution?
- Means
- Motive
- Opportunity.
MEANS:
Government official in charge of awarding contracts
MOTIVE:
Scratch my back, I will scratch yours. Former VP Richard Cheney is potentially a powerful same-party ally. The potential is likely to be realized only if you help a brother out first, though.
OPPORTUNITY:
Allegedly did 1)award no-bid business contracts to companies which included involvement of 2)Richard Cheney.
By the way, AG Christie also allegedly conducted illegal wiretapping of NJ citizens during his term as NJ Attorney General, spying on Americans without a judge's warrant, a violation of US Constitution.
His breach of public office makes Christie unfit to hold public office again.
