I am an old timer who has not posted a diary in ages. I'm a reader, analyzer, lurker - whatever label you'd like to pin on me.
However, I'm coming out of seclusion to say that Richard Engel is the bomb.
What a novelty - a "mainstream media" reporter (Engel is NBC's chief foreign correspondent) is actually reporting real news from Iraq and Afghanistan.
How do I know this?
I'm watching him real time right now on the Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC. Engel often appears for live commentary before and after video clips of his reports in the field from both Iraqi and Afghani theaters of war.
The man has balls in abundance plus smarts and real reporting ability (As an aside he is eminently watchable; i.e., cute. Can't help showing appreciation on all fronts.)
I have not seen another reporter who puts himself out there in the line of fire and who can be as effective while donning jacket and pancake makeup for the studio. Incisive, concise, informative commentary accessible to all - what a concept.
Thank you, Richard Engel - and kudos to MSNBC for showcasing his talents up close and unedited.
Keep bringing real news to the MSM.
