Mike Hillard is a Professor of Economics at the University of Southern Maine, a member of the AFUM and a friend to the working families of Maine. Last Thursday Mike spoke at the press conference for the Faces of The Employee Free Choice Act Tour, which was held in the SALT Institute in Portland. Faces of The Employee Free Choice Act Tour
In Mike’s words he spoke to place "the stories of the people that have experienced this one sided, unfair and unjust process...in context." He did so by demonstrating that there is a firm foundation of research that backs up what we see in our workplaces everyday. Specifically he cited the recently released study conducted by Kate Bronfenbrenner at Cornell University. "In one out of three elections a worker gets fired and all you have to do is fire one worker to get a chilling effect." "Two years after an election 37% of workers still have no contract" continued Mike.
Mike concluded saying, "We’ve seen the quality of work the quality of jobs, the quality of our society deteriorate in the name of profit... so both as an expert and as a citizen I call on our Senators, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins to support the Employee Free Choice Act."
