I've noticed a talking point making its rounds on the right--"largest peacetime deficit". Yesterday at the Republican Senate's press conference attacking health care reform, Sen. McCain used the phrase.
Here's the video (try to ignore the rest of the Dobbs BS)
<script></script><noscript>Embedded video from CNN Video</noscript>
At about 1:15 you catch McCain's claim, "We have the largest deficit in the country's history," (Pause-You can almost hear the wheels turning) "Uh, in peacetime."
Say what?
Last time I checked, we had troops fighting and dying in two wars. This doesn't even count the so-called "War on Terror".
This is outrageous.
First. It is insulting to soldiers to argue that we're at peace.
Second. We have spent, so far, almost $690 Billion on the war in Iraq.
Pat Buchanan was spouting this same point on the Today Show earlier this month.
It's time to shut down this talking point. Obviously they want to say that the deficit is the "largest" something--it's not. And we can't let them use any lies to defeat health care.
