The fulcrum of the man seems to be feelings of inferiority and dependancy on one side and vindictive malice on the other. He is easily threatened and resorts to bravado and obstinacy to maintain the facade. He hates the fact that there is an adult world out there, preferring to remain in the cocoon of a grandiose adolescence.
Hence he tries to defeat adulthood by running to Crawford, or calling Putin 'Pootie', a transparently 10 year old kind of aggression. Especially sad is his manifest dislike for the poor and the disabled. They remind him of his deeper feelings about himself, and thus he hates them as proxies for the self he runs from. For his sake, it's sad he didn't stay on in baseball. There at least he wouln't have been constantly reminded of his limitations
