I watched her town hall now on cnn.com. I started in the middle, but decided it was worth liveblogging:
Says she supports a public plan.
Abortion funding not in the plan. Tort reform not in the plan.
She read a statement from one of the people saying that Obama is a socialist. Far too many people cheered.
She said she knows some people won't vote for her for supporting health care reform, but said we have to stop kicking the can down the road. Many of the people in the crowd clearly support "kicking the can down the road."
Wishes these people were around when Medicare Part D was passed, which gives 8 billion to the pharma companies.
She's handling the hostile crowd very well. Says even when she gives them good news, they don't sound like they want to hear it.
The format is excellent. It's in a theater of some kind, so many people can fit and all have comfy seats. She's at a podium above them and is trying to take written questions.
Says she's happy to send anyone a copy of the senate bill to anyone that asks. Says they are criticized for rushing a bill through and then when it's not finished are criticized for not having a bill.
She said she's going to do between ten and fifteen town halls. As much as possible she's not letting people interrupt.
A question about veteran care came up. Apparently he didn't get the memo to only complain about health care reform.
oh. mi. god. Question is: "Where is the birth certificate." The crowd cheers. She says she just doesn't get it. She loves her country and her state, but there are some days where she just doesn't get it. As good of a response as there is.
A winner when she comes out against private airplane funds for congress.
She is saying she really enjoys doing town halls and does not agree with Pelosi that people are acting in an unamerican way. She gets a big THANK YOU shout-out.
That's it. I'm sorry I missed the beginning. McCaskill frustrates me many times, but she handled this crowd very well. And she supports a public option. She seems genuinely unafraid of the people who are going to vote against her, which is a big step forward.
