A number of Dailykos posters have written in support of liberals limiting their purchases to companies that contribute money to Democrats, like Bed Bath & Beyond and Starbucks, and avoiding companies that contribute to the Republicans such as Coors and Pizza Hut. Indeed, websites have been started to further this goal (see, e.g.,
http://buyblue.org/ and
http://www.choosetheblue.com/main.php).
However, don't we do far more harm to American workers when we buy foreign-built products than when we buy from Republican-contributing companies. How many of us have bought cars, electronic equipment, or clothing that were made overseas? Doesn't this cost American autoworkers, equipment manufacturers and textile and clothing workers their jobs? If we're REALLY committed to fighting for the American worker, wouldn't it be better to limit our purchases to American companies, rather than feeling all pure and noble as we drive our Saabs to Bed Bath & Beyond that - let's not forget - buys the vast majority of its towels, linens, etc. from overseas manufacturers?
I'm not saying that we shouldn't look at who receives our favorite company's political contributions. By all means do. But if you really care about fighting for the American worker, buy American.
