I get regular emails from the the Kaine campaign and I saw one with a new poll showing him with an 8 point lead. What's weird is the email had no link to the poll and I can't see it on the Richmond Times-Dispatch website or the Roanoke Times website. If this poll is legit, it's very good news. Also bad Bush approval #'s in Virginia. Excerpts are below
A new poll, conducted October 23-30 by the Center for Community Research at Roanoke College, is very good news indeed for our campaign. The poll, with a margin of error of +/-5%, shows Tim Kaine with an 8-point lead over his principal opponent, Jerry Kilgore - 14% of voters remain undecided.
Here are some additional significant points to take away from this poll:
Tim Kaine is the overwhelming choice of moderate and independent voters. Self-described moderates favor Kaine by almost 4 to 1 and indepents favor him 2 to 1.
While the Kilgore campaign expressed disbelief when this past weekend's Washington Post poll showed Tim Kaine winning in Southwest Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley, this poll confirms that Tim is performing better in both regions than many had previously thought possible. The poll shows the two candidates tied in Kilgore's native Southwest Virginia and Kaine with a 5-point lead in the Valley.
Tim Kaine is clearly the education candidate in this race. Of those voters who name education as their top concern, 62% favor Tim Kaine, while only 18% choose Kilgore.
Public support for Governor Warner remains extremely high - voters give him an overall approval rating of 72%. Meanwhile, President Bush wins the approval of only 38% of Virginia voters, the lowest approval rating for this president in any statewide public poll. It's no wonder that Jerry Kilgore has recently attempted to distance himself from President Bush, despite having been Bush's principal Virginia cheerleader during the 2004 election.
