I was lucky enough to talk to Governor Don Siegelman last night for a few minutes about how he is doing, what we can do to help him, to talk about Rove (since he is now linked to the NJ-Governor race in a manner that may violate the Hatch Act) and a few other things.
And when I asked him what we can do to help him most, his immediate response was that we need to thank John Conyers for his heroic efforts in keeping the investigations going into the US Attorney firings – not just who was fired and why, but who wasn’t fired, and why not (another thing that ties back to Chris Christie here in NJ). Without Conyers, this would have never gotten off the ground, it never would have moved forward, and it would stop moving forward.
So before I go even further, Please go thank him.
Ok, now that you are back, here is just why this is so important on so many levels. Obviously, it is because of Karl Rove that Governor Siegelman is in the situation that he is in. We know there was prosecutorial misconduct and we know that Karl Rove is behind it. There were a number of things that came to light in those documents, documents that were only released because of Cngressman Conyers’ efforts.
This hits home in more than one way. Living in NJ, Bush toadie and sleazy lawyer Chris Christie is leading Governor Corzine, based on a wholly undeserved reputation as a "law and order guy". However, we know that:
- Rove had a hand in the US Attorneys that should or should not be fired
- Christie was on a list of those to be fired, then he dropped subpoenas on Senator Menendez right before the 2006 election, and was then off the list of those to be fired;
- He discussed running for Governor with Rove, while he was still a US Attorney (not to mention the RNC and other republicans), and a number of other actions that may very well violate the Hatch Act.
So, this stuff about Christie was further uncovered and confirmed by accident and as a result of Conyers’ investigation. This never would have happened, and New Jerseyans wouldn’t know about Christie’s ties to potentially illegal actions, his loyalty to Rove and Bush, and his deeper ties to "party over country" but for these investigations.
And Christie isn’t the only one – you can be sure of that.
So please, contact Congressman Conyers and (1) thank him for all he has done, and (2) support him in moving forward – no matter how – with these investigations.
A LOT is depending on it, and it is exactly the right thing to do.
