Because all a "Death panel" really is, after all, is just reimbursing your doctor for spending time talking about end of life issues with you. That's not scary.
Well, it is a little scary. But people should do it.
Just in some interview sometime, just casually toss out that making a living will is a responsible thing that you should do for the sake of your family, to save them needless heartache and grief at a very difficult time. Just make your wishes known -- It's a moral, responsible thing to do for them. That's all. We like it when you give us homework like reading to our kids or checking our tire pressure; those have been some of your best, most relatable moments.
Really, this is an absurdly easy way to flip the frame on the whole counseling issue. Just say that the point of writing your wishes down is so that it's between you and your doctor, precisely so that no one --your family, the goverment, your doctor, your insurance -- has to guess. To prevent and forestall possible government intrusion. You don't need to point out that this is in fact the complete and total opposite of what crazy people are saying; we'll get it, and they'll look even crazier.
DO use the Terry Schaivo case a great teachable example of how tragic it can be for your family if you don't; DON'T belabor the mind-blowing hypocrisy of the right talking about government intrusion. Remind us it went all the way to Congress, but don't underscore who was in charge. We remember. Best keep politics out of it.
Just remind us there's a simple, basic chore we all should do for the sake of our family. No one grown-up on the right can possibly argue with that, and the ones who do will end up looking even worse. Remember the tire gauges?
Just a few minutes. Don't get into the weeds of who first had the idea or who voted for it when; most people don't care, and get tired of the gotcha! games activists on both sides play.
In about three hundred simple words you can clearly explain all that this measure is about and underscore just how disingenuous the opposition is. Simply. I think you should.
And if people do the chore they've been putting off because you reminded them, that not a bad thing either.
