This just in.
Rep. Charlie Melancon will run against David Vitter. This race has just bumped into the top 10 most competitive of 2010!
"Today, I'm announcing my candidacy for the U.S. Senate to replace David Vitter because Louisiana deserves better. Louisiana needs a different approach," Melancon said. "More bi-partisan. More disciplined. More honest and with a whole lot more common sense."
Rep. Melancon starts out at a disadvantage but with a horrible net rating, Vitter is vulnerable. He's making the leap because his district is soon to be dropped/redrawn into an unfriendly composition.
DailyKos/R2K had a poll in March with
David Vitter (R) 48
Charlie Melancon (D) 41
PPP had a poll in July with
David Vitter (R) 44
Charlie Melancon (D) 32
PPP didn't push leaners and had a whopping 24% undecided.
UPDATE:
Now with Video
I'll add one more thing, in both polls linked above, David Vitter has huge undecided favorables. Melancon is still somewhat unknown as well, but Melancon has a unique advantage of having the opportunity to frame an incumbent (Vitter) and create a narravtive on who Vitter really is.
