Apparently based on a rumor on a blog, the online world has been abuzz with speculation over an impending divorce for the former First Couple of Alaska.
Can you say "slow news weekend?"
Here's the official denial from Palin spokesperson Meg Stapleton, who posted the statement on her Facebook page, which then, of course, invited the mainstream media to start snooping around.
"Yet again, some so-called journalists have decided to make up a story. There is no truth to the recent 'story' (and story is the correct term for this type of fiction) that the Palins are divorcing," Stapleton wrote.
"The Palins remain married, committed to each other and their family, and have not purchased land in Montana (last week it was reported to be Long Island)."
We didn't believe the Long Island report anyway.
You can't see Russia from there.
It seems that
A National Enquirer story exposing previous affairs on both sides led to a deterioration of their marriage and the stress from that led to Palin's resignation as governor of Alaska last week.
(I no longer dismiss everything the National Enquirer publishes out of hand, as I once did.)
Here's a snippet from the blog
Immoral Minority:
Exclusive! Sarah and Todd Palin are Splitsville!
Earlier this week one of my best sources claimed to have explosive new information for me.
It took all week for us to finally get together, but last night we finally sat down for an amazing conversation. And what I heard made my jaw drop.
According to my source Sarah is finished with Todd and has decided to end their marriage.
She has purchased land in Montana (I wonder whose donations paid for that?), and may be considering moving herself and the children as far away from Alaska as she can get.
Now, a story on Alaska Report says that Palin's lawyers "threatened to serve papers at a kindergarten" to the blogger who "broke" the story.
Here's a link to Attorney Van Flein's letter.
from the Alaska Report story:
Thomas Van Flein, Sarah Palin's lawyer, threatened Saturday to serve libel papers at a kindergarten to the owner of the highly trafficked "ImmoralMinority" blog for a divorce story on the Palins. The blog was given until 3pm Saturday to remove the story and post a retraction. The blogger stands by the story.
This is now the fourth threat on behalf of Sarah Palin, including one to AlaskaReport.com, that Van Flein has made to bloggers in Alaska in the past few weeks. None of which he has carried out.
"Gryphen," the blogger, responded:
"Gryphen", the owner of the blog, laughed off the threat and told AlaskaReport - "Nothing that I wrote in my post was meant to be malicious. I trust my source and simply reported what I had been told.
Threatening to serve legal papers to an educator in a room full of five year olds? Now that is malicious."
Interesting times for the Palins, indeed. Yet, they might just continue on, in the hearts of the 20% or so of dead-enders who idolize Caribou Barbie above all others, as "just like us." After all - who hasn't had a divorce or so, out-of-wedlock teen pregnancy, meth-dealing in-laws, sweetheart deals with contractors, and a little helicopter-wolf-hunting in their families?
