If I wanted to formulate an optimistic opinion regarding humankind's future prospects I'd have to stop reading the newspaper ...

Not a day goes by without humankind demonstrating why our species simply isn't fit to dominate a living planet. From an evolutionary standpoint I'd have to say that natural selection must choose against the human form of intelligence since human intelligence doesn't actually amount to much.
Humans have thoroughly trashed the Earth and humans have spent at least 10,000 years committing acts of violence against each other and humans have become an existential threat to Nature and All-Life and humankind.
What a miserable, sad, pathetic animal.
I could spend all of time trying to cure humankind from this illness which will ultimately drive our species extinct but such an effort would be in vain. Humankind's greatest enemy is human nature. Nature's greatest enemy is human nature. God's greatest enemy is human nature.
It is as pointless to warn humans about the large-scale consequences of human behavior because to change human nature would involve a miracle more impressive than raising a man from the dead.
Human nature is beyond help. Humankind is quickly running out of time. Our civilization is dying and our planet is transforming into a hellish sort of place inhospitable to human life.
Humankind is headed to extinction and humans are accelerating this self-extermination process.
Only God could save humankind now but God wouldn't do so even if God existed.
Humankind cannot save itself. The illness afflicting the planet is terminal and malignant and therefore beyond the reach of any cure.
Nature must take her course. Nature will, too.
Humankind is a tragedy of immense proportions. Humans have squandered all of our species's special gifts and the planet and in the process exhausted all of the time alloted to planet-destroying.
Humankind's future is bleak. The 21st century isn't going to treat our species very well.
