A little footage of Lloyd Doggett's town hall in Austin on Saturday, August 8, 2009. The tea party folks were out in strength, but Democracy for Texas folks sent out an email, so lots of single payer and public option supporters were there. It seemed like we had them outnumbered, and they certainly were more restrained than at the grocery store mob scene the week before.
At the previous event, the tea baggers claimed to have chased Rep. Doggett away, but he was in no hurry to leave on this day. After a press conference inside a community health center, he set up in the parking lot and took questions from the crowd, alternating between supporters and opponents of reform.
There were some heated discussions, but no fights or threats of violence. The anti's were reduced to grumbling at the edge of the crowd. I had some discussions with some of these mostly middle-aged white guys. One guy claimed to be perfectly happy with his $1500/month (!) policy for a family of four, but he had never heard of recision.
After an hour on a blacktop parking lot at 100 degrees, they drifted away.
