Is South Carolina a place I want to spend my vacation dollars? I don't think so anymore. Not after last night.
When you combine South Carolina's lingering woes from flying the Confederate Flag over their capital, a governor who can't keep his fly zipped, and now Representative Joe Wilson's gross outburst of "You LIE!" during the President's speech last night, it all adds up to a huge public relations nightmare. Wilson tore down the facade of cordial behavior which was part of South Carolina's make-up. He made me think twice about where I want to go for vacation next year or any year coming.
Wilson is supposed to represent the people of his state. Well, maybe he is is also representative of his people too. I don't want to vacation in that type of environment where power people have such lack of control of their behavior. Such ugliness. I don't want to be exposed to it and I don't want to be reminded of it. Our family works hard for our vacation dollars. South Carolina won't be getting any of them.
You can take a look at their state tourism site and see if it's appropriate for you and your family for a vacation--they certainly have lots to do. But their civil environment, their clinging to the Confederacy, their political leadership problems are a huge turn off.
Here's their tourism site. I've linked to their contact page, let them know if you will be visiting South Carolina for a vacation in the near future or ever:
