New York City’s politics set waves into motion that ripple across the lands and oceans. The effects of globalization is reflected in our politics.
In June 2009, Bill Maher took on the entire political spectrum, accusing Democrats of selling out and Republicans of being "religious lunatics and Civil War reenactors."
He went on to say that every time President Obama does try to take on a liberal cause, the democrats stand in his way. He cited recent reports that Obama's healthcare plan may not materialize as promised because of high-ranking Dems. Maher then tore into the Republican party saying they are "flat-earthers" who "mostly communicate through AM radio," and "actually think Obama's a socialist." At this, he took the opportunity to say that is ridiculous because Obama's not even a liberal.

It might surprise many that Democratic mayors have lead New York City for the most part since 1845. New York Democrats led the country out of the Great Depression and established government safeguards that help the economy, businesses, the elderly, and the unemployed.
There have been 14 Democratic mayors, 7 Republican mayors and a mix of Fusion, Independent and Liberal mayors from 1901 to the present.
A Democrat was mayor during the Spanish American War. Democrats were mayors when the subways were built. Democrats were mayors when the Empire State Building was built. A Democrat was mayor when the ribbon was cut at the Twin Towers. Democrats built New York City. On the other hand, Republicans were at the head of New York City government when the World Trade Center came down. Republicans are still at the head New York City government.
New York Democrats have done great things. New York Democrats led the country out of The Great Depression, and won World War II under the leadership of Franklin D. Roosevelt. New York Republicans may take credit for triggering The Great Recession, and starting the two wars in Central Asia under the leadership of George W. Bush. The contest for the New York City Mayor’s office is not only a political duel between men, but ideologies.
Look at it as the Republican Party versus Democratic Party. Which party has done the most for New York City? If you just arrived in 1994, you might think it is a Republican city, built by Republicans. It isn’t.
The Democratic mayors since 1901 outnumber the Republicans 2 to 1. The Democrats have done more for New York City than any other political party. The long history of New York City is shaped by Democratic leadership. Democrats built New York City. The Metropolitan Museum, Lincoln Center , George Washington Bridge, Holland Tunnel , and New York Public Library all completed under Democratic civic leadership. The major institutions of higher learning, Columbia University, New York University, and City University of New York, existed before there were Democratic or Republican parties.
The Democrats built New York City. The Republicans raised the cost of living in it and around it. I think the voters should take a closer look at the Republican and Independent candidates before the next election.
