There is nothing in this diary that will be a surprise to most here. It is not meant to inform, or goad the lethargic to action. It is, in essence, a pissy rant.
If you watch any of the 24/7 newsertainment channels, you've likely seen an ad showing a hardworking, beleaguered (but startlingly attractive) mom unloading groceries from her car--groceries that consist primarily of two-liter bottles of pale green soda pop.
Everymom speaks directly to the camera and tells "Washington" that "we" can't afford a few pennies in taxes on her family's precious soda and "juice drinks." As she and her improbably mature kids disappear into the house, a banner informs us that this message has been delivered on behalf of "Americans Against Food Taxes."
Seeing this ad a couple of times has raised a question in my mind: Which Americans? All of us? Working moms? Mountain Dew junkies?
Thankfully, "Americans Against Food Taxes" have organized themselves into an actual group by that name, and put up a website explaining who they are. And quite a varied and honorable group of Americans they are. Don't believe me? Just ask them:
Americans Against Food Taxes is a coalition of concerned citizens – responsible individuals, financially strapped families, small and large businesses in communities across the country – opposed to the Government’s proposed tax hike on food and beverages, including soda, juice drinks, and flavored milks.
Well, heck, they sound just like me. Lord knows, I can barely afford to put YooHoo on my family's table, too.
And just below that heroic intro, they actually do a roll call, where you can meet all of these Americans.
Coalition Members include over 68,000 individual petition signers and the following:

It's not made clear whether any or all of those 68,000 "individual petition signers" are struggling moms like the one pictured in the ad or--could it be?--employees of those bottlers, boxers and trade groups of same.
Still, we can be charitable and grant the unlikely possibility that 68K people entirely unaffiliated with these companies and associations sought out this organization to register their outrage at a soda tax.
So, here's my question: Why isn't this group named "Sixty-Eight Thousand Americans and a Bunch of Sugar Peddlers Against Food Taxes?"
Not that people, businesses and interest groups should not be allowed to associate and petition the government in their interests.
I just hate getting lumped in with a bunch of pushers.
