I read an article in my local paper, The Marietta Daily Journal, dated 9-26-09 that there is now a new Whig Party formed in the US. It is called The Modern Whig Party and has about 30,000 members nationally. A Modern Whig Party branch has recently been formed in Georgia and has about 100 members so far.
Follow me below the fold for more info on this dramatic development.
The article was basicaly an extended interview with the founder of the Georgia Modern Whig Party Robert Madayag III. He is 37 and is an intellectual property rights attorney in Atlanta and also a Navy veteran. He describes himself as fiscally conservative but socially progressive. Although he said he voted for GWB and McCain, he became disturbed several years ago about the extreme rightward direction the Republican Party was taking. He says the Modern Whig Party rejects the positions of both the far left and the far right. The Whig's positions, Madayag said, are in the center and should appeal to 80% of the voters.
Madayag briefly outlined some of the party's positions. He said that abortion should be left up to the states. On immigration, he said that the US-Mexico border must be secure and he does not favor amnesty but does believe that illegal immigrants should be accounted for and pay taxes. He also said he believes in the Second Amendment but said some limitations are needed. In general, he said that the Modern Whig Party is a strong believer in states rights.
I have no idea how much of an impact the new Whigs will have if any, but I just wanted to alert the DKOS community that they exist and to be on the lookout for them. I wouldn't want us to wake up some morning and find ourselves surrounded by The Modern Whig Party.
