I don't think we should dislike a Supreme Court ruling just because it hurts our party more than the other. I think the bigger point is whether the legal ruling is valid or not.
If you or I decide to spend our money on pushing a certain political candidate, shouldn't we be allowed to? I do. I think the first amendment demands it.
Well, what if some of my friends and I have a company and we decide that we should spend some of our money on a political campaign. Shouldn't we be allowed to? I do.
What if millions of people own shares in a big corporation and the its leadership decides to support one candidate or another? Should we allow it? I do.
I think if the government decides that we cannot endorse a political candidate because we pooled our money, that my own political viewpoints were limited by the government. And if that's true, hasn't the government suppressed my political viewpoint? I think so.
So, I say that this ruling will be worse for Democrats than Republicans. That sucks. However, I say that I like this ruling. It brings more freedom, more discourse, and will lead to better campaigns.
Update
Clearly most of you (heck, maybe all of you) disagree with me. Fine. I think that this ruling will prove to be complete irrelevant, anyway. Trying to prohibit political speech has failed. Let's work on educating people to recognize bullshit advertising, to demand that corporations listen to their shareholders and to get people to vote.
