This cannot be verified yet, but residents of Madakhel in North Waziristan say Hafiz Gul Bahadar(not Baradar) may have been amongst the dead in yesterday's large drone attack. Yesterday's "drone swarm" was discussed here. Hafiz Gul Bahadar is of the Waziri tribe. He and another Waziri Taliban commander, Mullah Nazir in the Wana region of South Waziristan, signed peace agreements with the Pakistani state before their military assaulted the Mehsud-regions of South Waziristan. They were, at the time, still considered "good Taliban" who focused their violence on Afghanistan. And alleged spies at home, of course.
North Waziristan is considered the base of al Qaeda and their allies the Haqqani network. The Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, also close allies to al Qaeda are thought to still have a large presence in the region.
While the Haqqani network has a lot of power in this region, Bahadar is the local commander. Bahadar like Nazir fell out with the Mehsuds after Hakimullah rose to power, but it is thought that both commanders have since protected members of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan(TTP) who were forced to flee from the Pakistani army.
If Hafiz Gul Bahadar has been killed by U.S. drones, and it is still a big if, it may quickly accelerate the rising of tensions between North Waziristan and Islamabad.
