Lately, I've become enamored of SNAP PAC, an innovative and effective organization that assists the campaigns of progressive candidates for Congress. SNAP stands for Students for a New American Politics, and the group raises money to place college students in the campaigns of candidates in several races around the country. The campaign gets the benefit of a very motivated young staffer, and the student gets the benefit of seeing a campaign from the inside. The students who participate provide countless hours of critical work to a campaign in 2010 and are likely to be among the next generation of activists helping our candidates in the future, too. Double-win.
Darcy Burner and Rep. Tom Perriello were both SNAP-endorsed candidates in 2008, and both will be helping SNAP PAC raise money in Washington, DC for the 2010 races.
So how effective is SNAP PAC? Judge for yourself. Here's a student who SNAP PAC sent to the 2008 Franken campaign, describing her experience:
I wrote a diary a few weeks back describing SNAP PAC's work. Of course, you can go see their website, too. You'll see that they endorsed (and sent students to assist the campaigns of) Jim Himes (CT-04), Jeanne Shaheen (NH-Sen) and Mary Jo Kilroy (OH-15) in addition to Burner, Perriello and Franken. In very close races, every bit helps. Triple-win.
