With the recent events off the coast of Gaza there has been a lot larger group than normal commenting on the situation. One result of this is that a lot of antisemitic talking points have been thrown around. After the cut I'll point out a few of them and point out what's wrong with them.
- The Jews Run the Media
This is an old favorite and will almost always comes out in a discussion of Israel. This talking point consists, most often, of blaming the American media of giving a pro-Israel spin to any stories about the region, which it generally does, and attributes this to the fact that Jews run the media. Of course, Jews don't run the media, corporations do, but that doesn't stop some folks from claiming there is a nasty Jewish media conspiracy to delude the American public. The good old fashion "coniving Jew" trope.
- Dual Loyalty
There are a number of people in the U.S. who are dual citizens of the U.S. and Israel. Often times people will claim that specific people have Israels interests more in mind than the U.S.'s. The people so charged don't even need to have Israeli citizenship to be so charged, just be Jewish and support Israel. Of course, no one ever talks about other dual nationals having this problem. No one ever talks about how all those Irish folks with dual citizenship are really working for Irish interests and not American.
- Israel is Somehow in Control of the U.S. Government
This ties in heavily to the previous two. I'll start this one off by noting that it is true that Pro-Israel groups have a large representation in congress, I don't think there's any way to deny that. The problem here is that people assume that this is because of the sneaky, sneaky Jew, who has managed to trick the government into supporting Israel even though it is contrary to our interests. Of course, there's the fact that American weapons manufacturers are one of the biggest beneficiaries of our aid to Israel. That and Israel provides the U.S. with a nuclear armed attack dog in the region.
These, of course, aren't the only antisemitic talking points, but they are the most common on this site in my experience.
I'll add at the end here that I am, as anyone who participates in I/P diaries can tell you, decidedly pro-Palestinian. I am also pro-justice, and allowing antisemitism to perpetuate is decidedly anti-justice.
