I hinted at this in another diary about a week ago regarding Robert Wexler, and the problem was whether he would accept the position or not. It looks like he has and he's willing to go to Israel.
Marc Ambinder: Robert Wexler and Israel Ambassadorship
While it's not definitive yet, I'd say it's almost a surety at this point. Ambinder hasn't been wrong when it comes to appointments.
Friends of former Rep. Robert Wexler tell associates that the announcement of his nomination to be U.S. ambassador to Israel is imminent. (POLITICO's Laura Rozen first reported the news last week.)
For those who don't know as to who Robert Wexler is, here's a snippet from his wikipedia bio entry:
Wexler served in the Florida Senate from 1990 to 1996 before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in the 1996 election, filling the open seat vacated by fellow Democrat Harry Johnston. He has been reelected five times, never facing serious opposition in one of the most Democratic districts in Florida. During the 2008 campaign, Wexler agreed to receive JStreetPAC’s endorsement and financial support and lost funding from Washington PAC as a result. Morris Amitay, the head of Washington PAC, made clear to candidates seeking support from his PAC that he does not view favorably those who receive funds from JStreet. Amitay said "There’s a striking resemblance between the people they support and the anti-Israel Hall of Fame," [3]
Likely to be the best possible choice at this moment. Couldn't come at a better time.
BONUS: Look at this information regarding the Pentagon hiring back a formerly fired military member who was "DADT'd out".
The Pentagon added Army Reserve Col. Margarethe Cammemeyer, who was DADT'd out of the military when her sexual orientation was made public, to its Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services. A smart observer notes that this is one of the many "DOD panels that provide symbolism as well as substantive policy guidance" It might also have some advice on the DADT repeal itself. Hurt feelings and rancor between the White House, gay groups and the Pentagon? Not evident this week. Also note that President Obama issued a memorandum directing agencies to the extent permitted by law, to extend benefits currently available to spouses of federal employees to the same-sex domestic partners of federal employees.
