Judge Vic Rawl winning as a write-in candidate in South Carolina's Senate race would be poetic justice and mark the end of the Republican Southern Strategy.
In 1954, Strom Thurmond won his Senate seat as a write-in candidate. Before that in 1948 he split the Democratic vote to run as a third party Dixiecrat spoiler to defeat Harry Truman because Truman signed an executive order integrating military units. It didn't work but it gave birth to the Republican Southern Strategy. A strategy to prey upon the fear of racial integration in the segregated south. A strategy put into high gear by Richard Nixon after President Johnson signed the historic Civil Rights legislation.
Judge Rawl, as one of the few white southern male Democrats remaining, represents the antithesis to the Republican Southern Strategy. Jim DeMint jumped on the caboose of the Southern Strategy train. When DeMint is defeated it will be a signal that this odious strategy of division and intolerence has been permanently derailed.
The Alpha and Omega of the Republican Southern Strategy: the person who gave birth to the Republican Southern Strategy sixty years ago was an avowed racist and won by the write-in method; when the Honorable Vic Rawl defeats the Republican Southern Strategy in the form of Jim DeMint by the write-in method, the Judge will be delivering pure poetic justice.
