I know we've already got one Jon Stewart diary about his piece last night slamming Obama for going back on his word on civil liberties. I want to focus on the next segment he did, which was about the "discovery" of minerals in Afghanistan that could be worth $1 trillion.
And things don't look good for Afghanistan.
You've got tons and tons of incredibly valuable resources buried beneath your surface.... You will never not know war.
Video and relevant transcript below the fold.
This is the meat of what Jon has to say, making sure to also focus on the sheer stupidity of Steve Doocy, and the sheer callousness of Brian Kilmeade, in their talk about this discovery.
(From the June 14 broadcast of Fox & Friends)
CARLSON: You have this country, that is in the middle of a huge war, BUT... there's money to be found there, so who is going to now suddenly want to take over Afghanistan? What about the Taliban? What about China?
DOOCY: Sure. Because China is not too far away, and it's a great big country that needs a whole bunch of stuff.
Excellent analysis, my friend. China is indeed... a "great big country"... that could use... a "whole"... "bunch of"... "stuff". Steve Doocy, reporting the news in a manner that would get a 3rd grade student a "D" on a report.
Of course, it's not like we as Americans have any designs on the Afghan people's natural resources.
KILMEADE: They can be transformed into the mining center of the world. So there you go. All right, now they can pay for the war, perhaps.
Yes, Brian. Perhaps now the Afghan people will pay some sort of price for the war. You hear that, Afghan people, the free ride to rubble town is over!
Look, if I may address the citizens of Afghanistan directly: citizens of Afghanistan, you know those stories about poor people whose lives are difficult, and then they hit the lottery, and for some reason their lives are really turned to shit? That's YOU.
You think your country's war-torn now? This is what it's like when we don't want what's underneath you. Up till now, we're just motivated by revenge. But greed? That is a whole new ballpark, my friend.
Jon then closed with a comparison of the Afghans to the Na'vi from Avatar, in how we slaughtered them to get at the unobtanium they had in their homeland.
The minerals, sadly, will probably mean that every major country out there is going to want a piece of Afghanistan. Jon is probably more right than he realizes when he warned the Afghans, "You will never not know war."
