AVERY ISLAND
Most everyone has eaten Tabasco pepper sauce. The peppers are grown by the McIlhenny family on Avery Island, a salt dome located West of New Orleans, in Iberia Parish.
This is the statement made by the family just after the oil spill:
McIlhenny Company Gulf Coast Statement
As a longtime resident of the Gulf Coast of Louisiana, McIlhenny Company is deeply concerned about the situation unfolding in the Gulf of Mexico. And while the most destructive aspects are currently not expected to reach Avery Island or its surrounding wetlands, the entire region could be greatly impacted. Like all of our friends and neighbors in the area, we will continue to monitor the news coming out of the Gulf and send our thoughts and prayers to those affected so deeply by this ongoing situation."
And this is a YouTube video made by some very prescient people not long before the explosion—watch to soothe your troubled hearts:
http://www.youtube.com/...
I have searched all day to get the present status of Avery Island. I can’t find it. I hope the McIllheny’s early optimism turns out to be true.
Let’s give a shout out in our hearts to all of those wee, beautiful shiny little red, green and yellow peppers that look like big tears and hope that Avery Island, badly damaged by Hurricane Rita, is spared.
