As many of you are no doubt aware, the National Organization for Marriage is touring the country in a bus to spread their message of hate.
NOM demonstrates their hate by eating up cars.
This Sunday, August 15, they're going to be in DC.
And we must be there to meet them.
The bigots at the National Organization for Marriage are planning to end their nationwide bus tour of hate with a "Rally for Marriage 2010" in our backyard, on the Capitol steps, to oppose equal marriage and display their hatred of LGBT people in one of only six states with fully equal marriage laws. We need to prove to them that we in DC support love and tolerance, not hate and division.
Some have suggested that the purpose of these nationwide rallies is that they want confrontation. They want anger. NOM is right now involved in numerous lawsuits to hide the identities of people who donate to or sign petitions for marriage discrimination, because they claim that they're persecuted for their political beliefs.
So let's not give them what they want.
Instead, let's ridicule their ideas for the joke they are.
Join me in counterprotesting the NOM's bigotry through the creative application of absurdity. Make a weird sign like the ones in this picture. Be creative. Be interesting. We'll drown them out with meaningless chants and make it clear - their ideas don't DESERVE debate. They only deserve ridicule.
This Sunday at 2pm, on the steps of the Capitol, we will come bearing silly signs and sillier chants. Picture a thousand voices rising up in unison chanting "ONE FISH! ONE BIKE! ONE FISH! ONE BIKE!" and drowning out the message of hate and bigotry spewing from the mouths of the NOM's chosen few.
We will ridicule the haters, because there is no better response. And we will have fun.
Here's the Facebook page for the event. Please share it with your friends in the DC area and invite them to the event. The more, the merrier!
Also, if you have any other ideas for ridiculous protest signs or chants - even if you're not able to make it to DC this Sunday - please post them below. We're always looking for good ideas.
Who's in?
