I just read this on Think Progress:
Mississippi Middle School Segregates Student Government Officers: Only Whites Can Run For President
I just can't believe it! Seriously. I am just so dumbfounded, I am beyond sane right now.
The fact that this is an acceptable way of life in Mississippi and other southern states in 2010 is an abomination!
One of my first diaries that I posted here told the story of my childhood friend, Denise. Denise was black, as were a lot of my friends, since I grew up in a predominately black neighborhood in the city of New York.
Back then, I did judge people by their character and not by the color of their skin. If you were mean and hateful, I did not like you. Period. But the images on TV of white policemen beating black people for just 'being' affected many in my neighborhood, including 13 year old Denise.
I became active in the Civil Rights movement. I wanted to talk to every black person I saw and tell them, "What you are seeing is not me. 'They' do not represent me. I am not one of 'them'" Because I could understand their anger. I just didn't want to be on the receiving end of it.
And now, today, that feeling is overcoming me. I want to stand outside and greet every black, Muslim, Hispanic and any other group that feels belittled by the bigots who want to run (ruin) this country.
It's not me!
I just can't believe what is happening. We need to get up away from our computers and start to make noise. I'm going to start mobilizing. I have had enough!
(And oh, BTW, the last time I was this furious, I (along with hundreds of others) Stopped a nuclear power plant from being built in a residential neighborhood on an island.)
I'm fired up! Ready to go!
