OK, this is NOT exactly the swiftest move our Prez has executed this campaign season. Where is the agile communicator we elected?
I have to admit, I'm amused at how tone-deaf our President's response to the apathy of 'the base' is turning out to be. If he wanted to ensure that his base supporters got even more depressed, he couldn't do a better job! Is this a Manchurian Republican at work here? (Of course not. But I couldn't resist the term.)
It's really not 'just' the compromises on the health care bill, or the continuation of a broken war in Afghanistan.
It's the endless series of compromises with the political opposition, through endless new events like this one.
It's the dramatic lack of support for Congressional Dems.
It's the supine lack of interest in prosecuting the banking thugsters for investment fraud.
Capisce?
Other than that, Obama's right. He has reason to be upset at how his base is apathetic about the upcoming midterms.
But he needs to look in the mirror. Scolding the base is precisely what you do NOT want to do to motivate them. what is he thinking?
Bear in mind that I soundly agree with the basic point, which is that the alternative is unthinkable given their last decades' performance.
And yet it is all TOO thinkable to many people. People's memories remain stunningly short. The basic point the administration seems fixated on - don't put the guys who got us into this mess back in power - is a weak message, although accurate on its merits. It. Is. Not. Working.
Earth to Barack: the tough-love approach is an even worse idea.
Here's a constructive suggestion: Be Nice To Us. You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, you know. And the Oval Office is the biggest hummingbird feeder on the planet!
It's not too late. C'mon, get it together for cryin' out loud!
