I am still hopeful and cautiously optimistic that Coakley will win today in MA. But if she doesn't, I hope we can get a little reality check before Democrats collectively crap into their already bunched panties. With 58 votes in the Senate, Obama and Democrats will still have more Democratic Senators than Bush & Co. ever did. So what to do? While the typical democrat response would be to declare defeat and convene the circular firing squad, I suggest an alternative course. First, pass some simple legislation that America can read, understand and support -- like a tax on banks to pay back TARP losses. Also take Bush tax cuts for wealthy and transfer to middle class. Add a new tax on excessive banker bonuses. They did it in the UK.
The punditry is circling like vulture-sharks, ready to consume the lame duck Obama Presidency. Don't fall for it. Democrats in Congress need to stop playing into Media story lines. Don't answer loaded questions. Re-frame the issues. For example, when asked about fact that 3 Democratic Senators are retiring 2010, one should point out the fact that there are 4 Republicans retiring and 15 Republican seats up for grabs. Make GOP obstructionism and failed policies the issue.
Democrats in Senate need to break out the Robert's Rules of Order and do whatever it takes to pass health care reform with or without Coakley and/or Brown.
Then they should move on tax on banks and excessive executive compensation, tax credits for job creation. And start hammering GOP on obstructionist anti-American behavior. Move legislation in 2010 before elections so that Democrats have some accomplishments to run on. Punish Democrats who refuse to stand together. Dump Lieberman, he is a cancer on the party, let him be a plague on the GOP for a while.
Pres. Obama tried conciliation, moderation and bi-partisanship. All he got was a kick in the teeth. Dems now must fight for progressive agenda.
