Washigton DC - Democratic Congressional leaders expressed their shock and outrage that the Indonesian government may capitulate to the 55,000 Indonesians who want a statue of a President Obama as a young boy removed.
A facebook page, with over 55,000 members, have appealed to the Indonesian government to remove the statue of a boy President Obama. The 55,000 individuals, or .024% of the Indonesian population, state that, "for the dignity of a sovereign nation, Barack Obama's monument in Menteng Park must be removed immediately".
In a brief statement to reporters, Harry Reid, Senate Majority leader, took aim at the the Indonesian government. "I am appalled that the Indonesian government is allowing a small fraction of their population to hold the entire country hostage."
Alongside him, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi remarked, "If they think that the way to move their country forward is to cave in to the demands of a very slim minority of their populace, that in and of itself speaks to their ability to stand up for what is right for their people and their country". She continued, "The Indonesian government was elected based on the beliefs that they hold true the values of the electorate. For the majority to surrender to the minority on a very popular issue such as this would be a slap in the face to Indonesians worldwide".
Attempts have been made to contact President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia to comment on Senator Reid's and Congresswoman Pelosi's statements. Although no formal statement has been made from his office, a source within his administration did issue an email stating, "The American Democrats dais that? Seriously? Really?".
