Kasie Hunt of Politico reports that when the Supreme Court endorsed the personhood of Monsanto, Goldman Sachs, Exxon, etc., in the SOTU, Sam Alito mouthed the words " not true . " http://www.politico.com/...
The video is there to see on the Politico link above. Alito is clearly shaking his head and mouthing " not true " and he is doing it to be seen.
Mr. Alito, Mr. Injustice Alito, you who are in your position exactly because of the corrosion of our politics by big money. I don't like our president either. You don't like him because he has not sold out enough, or vigorously enough, to big money and rightwing interests, for your tastes. I don't like him because he has sold out too much, to my tastes. And while you have a very high position in our society, and I have a low one, compared to the president you are not so high. The state of the union speech is a most inappropriate time for your gesture. You might as well have been shouting, in that very public place and time, considering your high position.
The President was elected by the people. You were appointed by a President who left the country in shambles and with the whole world glad to see him go.
In fact, I consider Alito's display a greater insult than Joe Wilson's ' You Lie!' because of Alito's position. Exactly because of the influence of money on our politics, Alito feels emboldened to behave in such a way. At the time the founding fathers made the Supreme Court justices lifetime appointees, there was an expectation that they would not act out in such a way. But it shows that the lifetime appointment of the justices is a serious flaw.
Exactly because of the influence of money on politics, the Supreme Court is another major tool for corporations to stifle the will and deny the need of the people of the country. The people of this country should fight to change the constitution, however long it takes. If political awareness on the issue were to grow sufficiently, the people could demand this change, and other changes, such as abolishment of the electoral college.
Meanwhile, the general slippage in our constitution is often the wrong way - such as Congress giving up, unconstitutionally, its power to declare war, to the presidency.
